United Way of San Joaquin County raises millions of dollars every year to help support non-profit programs for people throughout the county. A local area community council works in partnership with United Way of SJC by helping to raise money for services that its residents use throughout the county. Council members promote United Way in the community throughout the year and encourage local businesses to support United Way by conducting a workplace campaign among their employees and by making a corporate contribution.
Community councils want to make sure that some of the campaign funds go to programs in their own community and that their citizens have an active role in distributing those local funds. So, United Way agrees to help provide an annual amount to active community councils to be properly distributed by the members of the council. Once a year, the council will solicit grant requests from non-profit agencies that provide services to their community and will diligently and faithfully allocate the available funds for the maximum benefit for the people in their community. The councils review summary reports from agencies that received council funding.
Community councils meet monthly and will sometimes hold special events/fundraisers to help raise additional funds for their grant process. Below is a list of current active community councils along with their current council (co-)chairs.
