Stocktonian of the Year is United Way exec

Tears in his eyes, a stunned look on his face and a tongue that was tied.

That's how Andy Prokop, United Way CEO and president, responded Friday morning when a committee of friends invaded his upstairs office with word that he is the 2012 Stocktonian of the Year, the 59th recipient of the annual award.

"What a blessing," he said more than once. "I'm at a loss for words."

"It's a miracle," said First Baptist Church Pastor Jim Dunn when the honoree was unable to speak.

United Way of San Joaquin County helps fund agencies to fill growing needs

Central Valley Business Journal Staff Writer

Few organizations have been as important in helping county residents cope with the economic hardship of the recession as has been the United Way of San Joaquin County.

Since 1926, the group has provided more than $100 million for area nonprofits.

"We are blessed to help fund nearly every nonprofit in San Joaquin County," said Andy Prokop, United Way president and CEO.

The organization expects to raise approximately $3.2 million during this year's campaign. Like most San Joaquin County agencies, the recession has hit the organization hard.

Winter is one of the best times to visit New Orleans. Mardi Gras beckons in mid- February. The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 3 at the Superdome. And the San Francisco 49ers look like legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

For those reasons organizers of San Joaquin County's annual Super Bowl Raffle say they believe this is a perfect time to go after tickets for Super Bowl XLVII (47).

Six grand prize winners will get two seats each. They also will receive $2,000 in spending money.
