Keynote Speaker: SARA GARFIELD, founder and director of the Transitional Learning Center for Homeless Children and a Professor of Education at CSUS Stanislaus. Sara will inspire you with the story of how her vision of educating the homeless children she saw at St. Mary's Dining Room evolved into a community suceess story. Recognized nationally for her vision, Sara has received the President Clinton Service in Education Award, and the JC Penny Golden Rule Award for Volunteerism. Sara Garfield epitomizes the concept of grass-roots activism and exemplifies the power of one woman to make a difference in her community.
Community Star 2007: Betty Whyte came to Stockton in 1940 to complete her nurses training that would launch a lifetime of service. Betty has assisted in over fifty disaster relief efforts across the US, Guam, Saipan, and St. Thomas. For over sixty years, Betty has been giving of herself to Stockton, profesionally and as a volunteer. Betty continues to serve as a member of several Boards of Directors including FEMA, was a Girl Scout leader, voluntees at the Judy Brown Adult Day Center, and serves on the Administrative Board of her local church. In addition to working full-time for local doctors and hospitals, Betty is a single mother of four children. When asked why she volunteers, her answer was simple: "I'd be bored if I wasn't. There is so much need out there, so why not help?" Betty is truly a Community Star.
